We Discuss The Truth About Atkins Cholesterol Lowering Diet

Posted on December 1, 2008

It was always an issue of credibility for the critics of the Atkins diet if it really is “good for the heart”. Dr Atkins was forced to admit that pregnant women that were following his low-carb diet would suffer fetal damage to their unborn babies, as he was called before a Senate committee. Thanks to many studies, it has been proven that Atkins dieters do not lose weight more quickly or keep it off more in comparison with patients that have been following a different diet. It wasn’t fat that was the initial loss of weight – but mostly fluid. On longer periods – it becomes very difficult to follow.

The medical report after Atkins’s death seemed to give credibility to his critics, especially the state of his heart health. Officially, people have known that Atkins died as a result of slipping on an icy pavement near his office. His medical report related otherwise – he had a very serious history with congestive heart failure, hypertension and heart attacks. His wife explained all these problems as a result of a virus he might of caught in a trip to Turkey. Even though this may or may not be true, there were other evidences which helped prove that the Atkins diet is not that good for the heart after all.

Over a two week period, Oxford University conducted a study that followed 19 people over that certain time span. The energy stored in their heart was reduced by an average of 16 percent when they followed a diet high in fat and low in carbs. This reduction was as high as 19 percent in some people. Besides all this, the people who were on this diet had trouble relaxing their hearts as easy as a normal person could. After two weeks of going back to a normal diet, these changes reverted back to normal.

Atkins acknowledged that higher levels of the bad cholesterol can cause potentially serious heart problems in more than 30 percent of dieters. Even though 30 percent is a significant number, the same statement did not state if in others the bad cholesterol levels will lower. And remember – there are many other ways to healthily lower your cholesterol.
