Fishing Etiquette Tips - Be A Good Neighbor When Fishing

Posted on January 6, 2009

Have you ever been having a quiet, relaxing day of fishing, hoping to catch a big one, when all of a sudden there is a loud blare of music that nearly makes you fall in the water? Looking around you see your nice, peaceful fishing spot has been invaded by a radio toting “good ole boy” who gives you a jaunty wave and sets up not 40 feet from you. Now, of course, every fish within a five mile radius has taken off. Someone obviously does not know good fishing etiquette.

Don’t be that “good ole boy”. Using proper fishing etiquette will give you and your fishing neighbors a more pleasurable fishing day. Below are a few tips to being a good neighbor when fishing.

1. Rule of thumb - take your line out of the water when another fisherman has a fish on his line. This will give him enough room to land his fish.

2. Room to cast - if you are fishing around other anglers be sure and give them plenty of room to cast. You can also check which direction they are casting and give them sufficient room whether in a boat or on the shore.

3. Don’t intrude - most people know that if an angler is already in the water, he is given the right of way. This also includes floating or walking along the bank. Always ask permission first before intruding on another fisherman’s location. Even with permission, move up river if possible which will allow the other angler plenty of space.

4. Secrets - when someone tells you about a favorite spot to fish, don’t tell everyone you know about it. Having their favorite spot overrun by everyone and his brother will not endear you to him and you can forget about getting any more secret fishing places from him.

5. Silence is golden - don’t bring your dog or your radio with you. If you do, you will not only scare the fish away but you will also disturb other fishermen. Most people like to fish because of the peace and serenity of communing with nature. Be considerate and keep the noise down.

These few simple tips will not only make you and your neighbor’s fishing more pleasurable, but will also show that you are an experienced fisherman who plays by the rules of etiquette and courtesy. This will also set a good example for the more inexperienced fisherman who will follow your lead.
