The benefits of measuring your body fat percentage are very obvious and clear. The goal is to lose body fat and keep the muscle or even to increase muscle, if you can. The amount of weight you lose or how fast you lose weight, does not matter at all, because weight loss is not fat loss.

Why should you measure body fat percentage

The worst thing that could happen, when you are trying to lose fat, is if you are not making any progress and you have no idea why. The key is to make your fat loss program very effective, so you are constantly making progress. The only way how you can make constantly progress, is if you measure your progress. This way you can find out very quickly, if you are moving in the wrong direction and make the necessary changes accordingly.

Measuring your body fat percentage on a weekly bases is important, just because you can make sure, that you are moving in the right direction. For example you could have a big problem, if you are constantly losing lean body mass. Of course a initial drop in lean body mass is natural and because you lose water weight, but if it goes on for a few weeks, then you are losing muscle.

When you are losing muscle over time, then it also means your metabolism becomes slower and that can decrease your rate of fat loss or it can even come to a stop. If you look at your chart and you find out, that you are have lost 2 pounds of fat and 0.5 pounds of lean body mass in one week for example, then this is a positive result. But if you had lost 1 pounds of fat and 1.5 pounds of lean body mass, then it would be a problem.
