Vitamin D - Could it Be the Superman of Vitamins and the Magic Bullet For Weight Loss?

Posted on August 8, 2009

We have all been wondering where is the magic bullet - the one pill that does it all? If only we could take one tiny inexpensive supplement that not only improved health but also fought disease. If that were to happen the world may just end and the Red Sox may actually win another world series (a little poke at my friends from “the nation”!) Well, a tremendous amount of research points to vitamin D quite possibly being a vital key to health for many of us. Vitamin D plays an extremely important role in the maintenance of all (yes all) of our organ systems!

You will find vitamin D in…

Vitamin D is a group of fat soluble vitamins found in foods such as yogurt, eggs, milk, cheese and fish. Most breads and cereals are also fortified with vitamin D. Vitamin D is also produced naturally when our skin is exposed to ultraviolet rays/sunshine. In many cases, we do not get an adequate amount of vitamin D and should take a daily supplement. Many doctors and researchers feel this “insufficient intake” is due to the use of sunscreens, eating too many processed foods and diets dominated by red meats. Fortunately, vitamin D supplements are readily available and relatively inexpensive.

The many jobs of vitamin D

Vitamin D is a very popular vitamin as far as the body is concerned. Every organ system needs vitamin D! Vitamin D helps with calcium absorption making it important for strong bones and teeth. It boosts the immune system and has some properties that help it fight and destroy many types of cancer cells. Vitamin D also helps with muscle and soft tissue health making it very useful in battling issues like fibromyalgia, chronic muscle sprain and strains. Vitamin D deficiency has also been linked to cardiovascular disease, obesity, anxiety and depression. Vitamin D has so many responsibilities in maintaining overall good health. (you will also note foods high in vitamin D are weight loss friendly!) If you find yourself struggling with difficulty losing weight or other health issues consider adding vitamin D! Supplementing with 1000-1200 iu of vitamin D (D3) per day for 4-6 months could change your health!
