What You Should Know About Fad Diets
Posted on November 5, 2009
We need to understand some basic facts about obesity. A lot of people tend to think that if you are overweight it then naturally you have a metabolic disorder. An example of metabolic disorder which could make you overweight is thyroid disorder. However there are some cases where you are obese and yet you do not have any metabolic disorder. The reason why you could be obese is simply because you are eating plenty of junk food or eating a lot of food which is more than your nutritional requirements.
There is however cases where you find a person with a great metabolism which burns a lot of body fat. This people have no problem with issues of being overweight, they can eat as much as they like and yet still maintain there weight. This characteristic however will not depend with your genes.
The thing you need to understand about fad diets is that although they lead to an initial weight loss, it will not help you maintain your weight. What this means is that fad diets will not lead to a permanent loss of weight, instead you will gain weight immediately you stop the diet. What you also need to understand is that the weight you lose is not fat but your lean body muscles. When you begin to put on weight you will be increasing the percentage body fat. The reason is because when the body is in starvation mode, it will start to burn muscle tissues and leave out fat in order to conserve energy levels.
You will thus experience an increase in the percentage of fat and this will cause you to increase weight. The problem is two folds when the body is in starvation mode; this is because the loss of muscle tissues also has the effect of reducing the body metabolism. When your body metabolism reduces, you will not be able to lose a lot of body fat hence you will not lose weight. When the body does this you will develop poor body composition.
There are certain things you need to incorporate in your quest to lose weight such as observing good eating habits. The other thing is that you should not try to lose weight quickly but instead you need to formulate a long term plan. When you try to lose weight quickly you will only lose your body muscles and not your body fat.
If you want to lose weight you should include the following in your diet; focus eating low calorie foods such as salads, vegetables, and fruits, avoid taking empty calories such as alcohol and excess sugar, you also need to increase your training intensity, you could also try and join a support group, you need to quit taking fried foods, you should also seek the opinion of a nutritional expert before going on any kind of diet. If you want to lose weight you should ensure that you are losing fat and not muscles.
