Age Gracefully or Fight It All the Way Home

Stopping Father Time is possible! Extending the so-called normal life span is easy to say, easy to do but very hard to live. Time marches forward and as the years pass by it seems the clock is running on steroids. Our joints ache, we do not rest as well, we cannot tolerate foods we like, and well to put it plainly some days we just do not feel good. Typical aging process that every one seems to go through as years pass, but we do not have to accept this as a fact in our lives. Taking a few simple steps today can extend the useful, quality years of your life. The emphasis here is on quality, because just extra years does no good if you spend it all hooked to a machine fighting for every minute.

Elementary biology taught us that our bodies are made of cells and that these cells work together in the dance of life to die and be reborn repeatedly. This cellular life cycle is designed to get stronger but most of the time it gets weaker due to environmental factors and nutritional problems we exacerbate ourselves. Getting off the broken cycle and getting on a brand new cycle is the key to changing the quality of your life. Cells require food to do what it is they do. Good food, bad food they do not care. If they get bad food then the next generation of cells will be weaker than the one before. This is aging. However, provide them with the building blocks of superstars and that is what you will get, superstar cells. Cells that are stronger than the previous generation, this is what is meant by regeneration. While the clock moves forward your body gets stronger rather than weaker.

While not quite a simple as that, you can make a significant difference in your body by taking care when it comes time to eat. Balancing the essential fatty acids (EFAs) in your body is a good starting point. It is easy to start here because it requires the fewest changes to your current lifestyle. EFAs are called that because they are essential to the growth and development of your body and the body cannot make them. We get EFAs only through the foods we eat. American diets are full of fat, some good, and some worse. The worse fat is known as omega-6, the good fat is known as omega-3. In order to begin to combat aging we must gain a strong balance of omega-6 to omega-3. The optimal ratio is 2:1 and the normal diet is approximately 20:1 according to the Mayo Clinic. A few simple and inexpensive changes can make a great difference here. The first is to cut out highly processed fried foods as these foods have high levels of trans fat. Begin to use olive oil, flax seed oil and quality peanut oil instead. The addition of tree nuts such as walnuts, almonds, pistachios, and pecans are a great and tasty way to add omega-3 fatty acids to your diet. Fish and fish oil supplements are another easy way to add variety and goodness to your simple daily fare.

As you begin to approach the ideal ratio of 2:1, the benefits of these changes will become apparent. You will have more energy, sleep better, become more mentally focused, find joint discomforts disappearing, and have a sunnier disposition. All from these small changes to your diet. The key to having a longer, higher quality of life is balance. A variety of food in your diet, proper rest, and exercise can give you all the life you want and more.
