Swimming – How to Swim Freestyle
Posted on December 16, 2011
Freestyle is the most popular of swimming strokes. What most beginners do not realize is that they should relax the arm during the recovery. The swimmer must move the hand quite high and far away from the body.
You can take the hand higher than the elbow. What happens is that in this way the effort of the muscle as well as the drag is considerably increased as the speed increases. Learn how to use your shoulders so that it allows the hand to stretch forward as far as possible.
Different people have different opinion about how the hand should enter the water. Some experts feel that the hand must enter the water with the thumb first. This helps to reduce the drag as there is possible turbulence.

Whereas some people feel that the middle finger goes into the water as the hand is bent down. This way it gives the swimmer thrust from the start itself. At the start of the pull, the hand generally moves slower than the velocity of the swimmer. As the swimmer gains speed, the hand moves much faster than the velocity of the swimmer.
If you want to know about the leg movement in this kind of swimming it is pretty simple. The swimmer moves his legs one after the other. One leg moves in such a way that it pushes the water down whereas the other leg moves up. The legs are able to provide very little of the total speed, but they play an important role in stabilizing the body position. The leg of the swimmer at the start position bends slightly at the knees. They kick the lower leg and the foot downwards after that. What most swimmers do is that they bend the legs more than required or kick excess water out.
The swimmer’s face is in the water during freestyle. Swimmers take breaths through the mouth as they turn the head to the side. The freestyle can be leant easily with a little bit of effort. There are trainers who teach people to learn this stroke. Remember, when you swim, the movements must be effortless and should be easy of the swimmer. If you know the right body movements, the leg movements and the way to breathe it becomes a lot simpler. Most swimmers love to master this style as it enables them to swim the fastest.
